The good news of returning to venues

What chance, and what a pleasure: we are devoting the next few weeks to several projects that are about to come to life! In these times, it must be said, a bit gloomy, we are very happy to share these moments of live music with you!

Ways of Returning

On February 23, 2022 as part of Le Vivier series at the Édifice Wilder, the Ways of Returning concert will weave together an acoustic string quartet and electronics with a world premiere by Nicole Lizée and works by Tom Johnson, Michael Oesterle and Anthony Tan, amplified by Jacinthe Racine's light design and the architectural beauty of the Espace Orange hall.
In Hexbreakers, Lizée reworks musical motifs with the brilliance of a talented DJ. We are excited to finally present a work by Nicole written especially for us. The first milestone in a burgeoning collaboration!

The quartet visits the contrapuntal possibilities of timbre in Tan's piece, Ways of Returning, exploring the acoustic genre in a "Noise" and "Dark Ambient" style. For the record, this work, winner of the 2021 Jules Léger Prize, was the last one we presented live in Colorado before the "big lockdown" on March 12, 2020. It is a great pleasure to finally perform it in Montreal.

Oesterle's inspiration comes from his fascination with the lives of scientists and their focus and creativity, their work methods and the adversity they face in society. Commissioned in 2010, the Alan Turing Quartet has been transformed several times, in a work of goldsmithing, to finally reach its final distilled form!

Johnson builds a poetic musical world by combining mathematical formulas. Witness to the effervescence of the New York experimental school, notably with his role in the Village Voice magazine in the 1970s, this minimalist composer who rubbed shoulders with Feldman and Cage is still active today at the age of 82. For this concert, the quartet is releasing a portrait album of Johnson on Collection QB. Make sure to grab your tickets soon, seating is limited!

* Please note that the vaccine passport is mandatory to attend. This event will respect public health measures, masks are mandatory.

Quatuorama

Many times postponed for the last 2 years, we are delighted to finally announce that Quatuorama will be held indoors! With a panoramic string quartet program, we will play works by Michael Oesterle, Igor Stravinsky, Ana Sokolovic, Tanya Tagaq, Franz Schubert and Cassandra Miller. Scheduled for Sunday, February 13 at 3pm at the Maison de la culture du Plateau Mont-Royal. We thank the entire team for their warm welcome and enthusiasm. Free admission with pass.

To be released on Collection QB: Tom Johnson: Combinations

Tom Johnson uses numbers as base material, turning formulas, combinations and other mathematic phenomena into music. And somehow, this music becomes poetry, sometimes like a haiku, sometimes like a sonnet, sometimes descriptive and clear, often enigmatic but always beautiful. The album will be available starting February 24th 2022.

Opus Gala Prize

We are proud to highlight the nomination of our Collection QB album, Alvin Lucier: Navigations. Also, our webconcerts Trip and Imaginaire Nord are nominated for mentions of excellence, the unveiling of the winners will be at the Gala, on March 6th 2022!
