This year, the TIME:SPANS festival in New York replaced its 2020 programming with videos and performances broadcast online. Cassandra Miller's new piece, Thanksong - which we were scheduled to perform several times this summer with superb British soprano Juliet Fraser - has now been transformed into an online creation. Cassandra's creative process is extremely organic; built in 'layers', Thanksong was originally designed to be played spatially, and was extremely well-suited to being adapted and recorded 4000km away.

In the middle of a heat wave, we entered one-by-one into an isolated black box to record each separate track. We were accompanied by a soundtrack sung by Cassandra: it was a strong and reassuring voice to rely on, and a constant unifying reminder that we are all together. We find the result to be a perfect reflection of the strange situation we all find ourselves in.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this project to life: Thomas Fichter, director of TIME:SPANS festival (presented by the Earle Brown Music Foundation Charitable Trust), Cassandra Miller (composer), Juliet Fraser (soprano), Stephen Harvey (video post-production), John Klepko (sound), Guillaume Carbonneau (video), Alexander Barnes (sound and video), UBU compagnie de création, Espace Go, and Plumcroft Primary School.
We've taken advantage of the summer to offer impromptu concerts in the alleyways of the city. It's a pleasure to encounter the public in such a relaxed and pastoral atmosphere - watch for our next appearance in an alleyway near you! We will be playing outside at the Quartier des spectacles in the coming weeks, as part of Le Vivier's Les Bruits de la Nature (Parcours l'eau and Parcours les arbres). Taking place this Saturday, August 15 at 3pm and Friday, August 28 at 4:45pm, you can read more about it here. We hope to see you there!
