QB + Andy Moor + Yannis Kyriakides October 12-16

On the road with Québec Musiques Parallèles

Toronto - October 12 - The Music Gallery
Québec - October 13 - La Charpente des fauves
Chicoutimi - October 14 - Centre d'Expérimentation Musicale
Rimouski - October 15 - Coopérative de solidarité Le Paradis
Montréal - October 16 - Groupe Le Vivier

Quatuor Bozzini joins forces with the duo Andy Moor / Yannis Kyriakides to offer « Cassettes », a new work for quartet and electronics by Kyriakides and « Orbital », an audiovisual score that transports us around the Amsterdam ring road — the A10 — a journey taken during the first period of confinement in 2020.

In « Rebetika », Andy Moor and Yannis Kyriakides explore and exploit the rich and mysterious terrain of Rebetiko, a popular music born in Greece in the 1910s. The songs celebrate the “rebet” way of life, a mixture of goodness of heart and cunning. The duo’s music moves from composed and arranged interpretations of old tunes, to completely improvised pieces that capture a sense of the gesture and tonalities of the original music, while incorporating a decidedly contemporary touch.

Andy Moor / Yannis Kyriakides - Crédit Thomas Huisman
Andy Moor has a background in the British post punk of the 1980s and he’s a member of Dutch band The Ex since 1990. His energetic, rhythmically oriented playing is characterized by physical manipulation of the strings and parts of the electric guitar. As an improviser he collaborates with artists from different disciplines, such as poet Anne-James Chaton, filmmaker Jem Cohen and DJ/Rupture. He also runs the Unsounds label together with composer Yannis Kyriakides and designer Isabelle Vigier.

Yannis Kyriakides is a composer and sound artist focused on creating new forms, notations and hybrids of media that highlight the multi-sensory experience of listening. The question as to what music actually communicates is a recurring theme in his work and he is often drawn to the relations between music, text, and image. He co-founded and runs a label for electronic music, Unsounds, is active as an electronics improviser with musicians like Andy Moor and Maze Ensemble and teaches composition and multimedia at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

QB in France: Festival Riverrun, Albi (France) October 8-9

We will be in Albi to present two concerts at the Riverrun Festival with works by Jürg Frey, Tom Johnson and Alvin Lucier.

October 8 - Alvin Lucier

For this concert, the musicians pay tribute to the composer Alvin Lucier who passed away in December 2021. His work, based on principles of echolocation, acoustic physics and psychoacoustics, explores the natural properties of sound in relation to space, propagation and interference phenomena.

Alvin Lucier is a major influence on a whole new generation of avant-garde musicians and composers

October 9 - Grounds of Memory

Jürg Frey's "Grounds of Memory", composed for Peyee Chen, the Dedalus Ensemble and the Quatuor Bozzini, is based on texts by Emily Dickinson, including her recently published "Envelope Poems”. This work, "The Gorgeous Nothing", includes handwritten fragments, brief thoughts, and drafts of poems written by hand on used envelopes specially prepared for this purpose, made of scattered words, word clouds, first stanzas of poems.
"Grounds of Memory" is the third part of a trilogy. The first and second parts, also composed for soprano and ensemble, are based on texts by Gustave Roud, Bai Juyi (772 - 846) and texts written by Jürg Frey. This third piece, for large ensemble, concludes this cycle. The selection of texts and poems touches on an existential sensitivity and evokes the vision of a never-ending path.
