Quatuor Bozzini is preparing concerts for the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, for Bang on a Can’s Long Play Festival in New York, and for Suoni per il Popolo Festival. We also want to highlight that the new release on our Collection QB label, “Ryan Scott: 21st-Century Canadian Snare Drum” was just named on the critics’ long list on Preis der Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik.

We join the music community in celebrating the life and music of the great Éliane Radigue.
What an immense privilege it was to meet her, to share, work, laugh, and sing with her. She opened her home to us, and we sailed together through our work on Occam Delta XV. She was generous, witty, and so gentle and kind.
She leaves us so much to listen to and discover; we are forever grateful. Thank you, Éliane.
We will perform Occam Delta XV at Long Play Festival in New York on May 3; see below for details.

Quatuor Bozzini joue Morton Feldman (Montréal) |

To mark the centenary of Morton Feldman’s birth, a special concert presented by Bourgie Hall will be taking place in the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, featuring iconic contemporary music ensemble Quatuor Bozzini.
A figurehead of the American avant-garde, Feldman developed a singular musical language characterized by slow tempo, sensitivity, and extreme attention to timbre.
His String Quartet No. 1 on the program offers an immersive listening experience in which time seems to stand still. Motifs emerge, are transformed, and disappear within an uncommonly subtle musical texture that encourages deep, contemplative listening.
A pre-concert talk will be given by MMFA Chief Curator Mary-Dailey Desmarais and Quatuor Bozzini. Together, they will explore the connections between Feldman’s world and the New York School of painting, shedding light on the parallels between visual art and music in this fascinating work.

Long Play Festival Bang on a Can (New York)

We are proud to make our first appearance at the Long Play Festival produced by Bang on a Can on May 2-3 in Brooklyn, NY. Described as “the most important classical music festival in New York” (New York Times), this year’s edition features over 70 concerts during May long weekend.
Our centenary celebration of Morton Feldman continues with a performance of String Quartet No. 1 (1979) on May 2, and then we feature Éliane Radigue’s Occam Delta XV (2018) (American premiere) and Composer Kitchen alumnus Sarah Davachi’s Long Gradus (2020-21) on May 3.

Hypnokaséta (2020)
Performed by: Quatuor Bozzini, Andy Moor & Yannis Kyriakides
Hypnokaséta, composed by Kyriakides, is a continuous set of 16 pieces for string quartet and electronics based on dreams that he had during the first few months of lockdown, April-June 2020. Accounts of these dreams are encoded in the music that is played by the quartet and also encrypted in the sound textures that surround this. The pieces alternate between quartet as the foreground and electronic interludes, where solos or duos underpin the soundscape. The name ’cassettes’ refers to a theory of dreams proposed by Daniel Dennett, that says that dreams are loaded into consciousness like a cassette tape, just before waking.

Arrangements and Improvisations by Andy Moor & Yannis Kyrakides
Andy Moor (guitar) and Yannis Kyriakides (computer) lovingly deconstruct and reassemble their favorite rebetika music in a set of nine pieces that encompass a wide scope of musical vision. This is an unusual and original take on the so-called "blues" music of the Greek diaspora of the early 20th century. Composer Yannis Kyriakides and guitarist Andy Moor offer their own avant-garde take on this music over the course of the piece. The starting point for these songs is a series of scratchy old bouzouki recordings, which are then sampled and manipulated while real-time guitar is overlaid. This meeting of old musical styles, decrepit recordings and very modern string experiments results in an often very emotive blend, effectively re-writing the past with a combination of reverence and adventurous Tetuzi Akiyama-like musicianship, sounding like an angular, Eastern European Charley Patton on the especially haunting 'Minores’.

We are very happy to present percussionist Ryan Scott on Collection QB.
Ryan Scott, championed by Gramophone as “a chameleon-like virtuoso,” presents 21st-Century Canadian Snare Drum, a double-disc release of solo snare drum pieces. The instrument is the centrepiece throughout the album—it’s about the art of the drumming itself, but most works include minimal auxiliary instrumentation, electroacoustics, vocalizations or some combination thereof, alongside a wide variety of techniques spanning traditional virtuosity to inquisitive-minded peculiarity. As such, the snare drum solo serves almost as a conceptual restriction to stimulate the imaginations of its exceptional and internationally-recognized cast of commissioned Canadian composers. |
